Why this calculator

Andalucía is Spain's most populous autonomous community (~8.5 million residents) and largest by area. Sevilla is the capital, but Málaga has emerged as the economic dynamo with strong tech and tourism sectors. Andalucía's autonomic IRPF rates have been progressively reduced under the Moreno government (2019 onward) and are now close to Madrid baseline for most income brackets, making Andalucía one of the more tax-competitive Spanish ACs.

This calculator uses the 2025 Spanish IRPF baseline (Madrid baseline) with a small positive stateRate delta for Andalucía's slightly higher rates at upper brackets. For most professional incomes, use 0 to 0.5 percent delta. For high incomes above 80,000 euro, use 1.5 to 2.5 percent.

A rough sanity check: a single filer on 45,000 euro in Málaga with 2,000 euro of plan de pensiones takes home about 32,800 euro after IRPF and Seguridad Social. The same earner in Madrid would take home about 33,000 euro, a difference of only 200 euro. Andalucía has effectively closed most of the tax gap with Madrid for middle-income filers.

Málaga (population ~580,000 metro 1.6 million) has been Spain's fastest-growing tech hub since 2020, with major investment from Google (Google Safety Engineering Center in Málaga), TDK, Vodafone Spain Málaga operations, and the rapidly growing Málaga TechPark. Sevilla (population ~700,000) has substantial government and aerospace employment (Airbus Sevilla operations). Granada has University of Granada and IT outsourcing. The Andalucian economy combines tourism (Costa del Sol, Costa de la Luz), agriculture (largest agricultural producer in Spain by output), and emerging tech.

The deep dive

Andalucía autonomic IRPF reforms

Andalucía's autonomic IRPF rates were significantly higher than Madrid baseline until 2019. The Moreno government has progressively reduced rates: in 2022 the regional inheritance tax (Sucesiones) was effectively eliminated, in 2023 various income brackets were reduced, and as of 2025 the autonomic IRPF is close to Madrid baseline for most brackets.

The combined federal-plus-autonomic top rate in Andalucía is approximately 47.5 percent (vs Madrid 45 percent), with the gap concentrated at the highest income brackets. For typical mid-income professionals (30k to 60k euro), Andalucía and Madrid produce very similar take-home pay.

Málaga as the new Spanish tech capital

Málaga has become Spain's fastest-growing major tech hub. Key developments:

  • Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC) Málaga opened in 2023, the company's third such European center after Dublin and Munich. Substantial workforce in security engineering and trust-and-safety.
  • TDK (Japanese electronics) has Málaga European operations
  • Vodafone Spain has substantial Málaga operations
  • Málaga TechPark hosts hundreds of tech firms and startups
  • The University of Málaga has produced strong tech graduates

Málaga tech salaries are typically 75 to 90 percent of Madrid for comparable roles, partially offset by lower cost of living (Málaga median apartment prices around 3,500 to 4,500 euro per square meter, roughly 70 percent of Madrid).

Sevilla and Andalucian government

Sevilla is Andalucía's capital and has substantial autonomic government employment, plus historic significance and tourism. Major Sevilla economic sectors include public administration, education (University of Sevilla), Airbus Sevilla operations (substantial military aircraft and helicopter component production), and tourism.

Sevilla median apartment prices around 2,800 to 3,800 euro per square meter, making it one of the most affordable major Spanish cities.

Costa del Sol tourism and lifestyle migration

The Costa del Sol from Málaga south to Marbella has been one of Europe's most popular destinations for Northern European retirees and increasingly for remote-work professionals since 2020. Substantial expat communities exist in Marbella, Estepona, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Mijas. The remote-work migration has driven sharp housing price increases in these coastal towns.

For international remote workers, Andalucía offers low-cost living, good climate, strong English-speaking expat communities, and now competitive autonomic IRPF rates. The Spanish Beckham Law and Digital Nomad Visa provide additional tax-residency options for some international relocators.

What this calculator does not include

Andalucía-specific autonomic deductions (child credit, dependent care, etc.). Plan de pensiones limit. Sucesiones (inheritance tax, effectively eliminated in Andalucía 2022). IBI municipal property tax. For precise Andalucía tax returns, use Renta Web or Spanish tax software. The Agencia Tributaria Andalucía portal provides Andalucía-specific tax tools and guidance for residents.

Andalucía cost of living and quality of life

Andalucía offers competitive cost of living across most provinces. Sevilla median apartment prices around 2,800 to 3,800 euro per square meter, Málaga similar but rising rapidly due to tech and remote-work migration. Smaller Andalucian cities (Granada, Córdoba, Huelva) have median home prices in the 1,800 to 2,800 euro range, among Spain's most affordable major-city options. Combined with the warm Mediterranean climate, extensive cultural heritage (Andalucía has 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites), and now-competitive autonomic IRPF, Andalucía offers strong real disposable income for both Spanish and international professionals choosing to relocate.

Andalucía agriculture and olive oil

Andalucía is Spain's largest agricultural producer and one of the world's largest olive oil producers. The Andalucian olive oil sector produces approximately 30 to 40 percent of global olive oil production. Agriculture supports substantial Andalucian employment in production, processing, and exports, particularly in Jaén, Córdoba, Sevilla, and Granada provinces.
