Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid) is Spain's economic and political capital with about 6.8 million residents. Madrid is the most popular Spanish autonomous community by IRPF (income tax) competitiveness: the Comunidad de Madrid government has progressively lowered the autonomic portion of IRPF since 2019, producing the lowest combined federal-autonomic top rate among Spanish ACs (about 45 to 46 percent vs Cataluña's 50 percent for the top bracket). For typical professional incomes in Madrid (30,000 to 80,000 euro), the effective IRPF rate is 15 to 25 percent, comparable to Catalonia at the same income but with about 1 to 3 percentage points lower at higher brackets.
This calculator uses the 2025 Spanish IRPF estatal-plus-autonómico combined rates (with Madrid as baseline) plus Seguridad Social trabajador contribution (6.35 percent of gross). For other Spanish ACs, use a positive stateRate input to add the autonomic delta above Madrid baseline.
A rough sanity check: a single filer on 50,000 euro in Madrid with 2,000 euro of plan de pensiones contribution takes home about 35,200 euro after IRPF and Seguridad Social. The same earner in Cataluña would take home about 34,400 euro (the Catalonia IRPF surcharge is roughly 800 euro per year at this income level). This Madrid tax advantage has been a major driver of corporate and individual relocation from other Spanish ACs to Madrid since 2019.
Madrid also has Spain's largest concentration of high-paying professional employment: Banco Santander HQ, BBVA HQ, Telefónica HQ, Repsol HQ, Iberdrola main offices, plus most large Spanish corporations' headquarters and a substantial international banking and consulting presence. Tech salaries in Madrid are typically the highest in Spain, often 20 to 30 percent above Valencia or Sevilla for comparable roles. The cost of living, however, is also among the highest in Spain (Madrid median apartment prices around 4,800 to 5,500 euro per square meter in inner districts, 3,500 to 4,500 in outer districts).
Madrid IRPF autonómico structure
The Comunidad de Madrid sets the autonomic portion of IRPF for residents. The 2025 Madrid autonomic rates are among the lowest in Spain across all brackets:
- Up to 12,450 euro: 8.5 percent (autonomic) + 9.5 percent (estatal) = 18 percent combined
- 12,450 to 17,707: 10.7 percent autonomic + 12 percent estatal = 22.7 percent combined
- 17,707 to 33,007: 12.8 percent + 15 percent = 27.8 percent combined
- 33,007 to 53,407: 17.4 percent + 18.5 percent = 35.9 percent combined
- 53,407 to 60,000: 19.4 percent + 22.5 percent = 41.9 percent combined
- 60,000 to 300,000: 20.5 percent + 24.5 percent = 45 percent combined
- Above 300,000: 21 percent + 24.5 percent = 45.5 percent combined
Madrid's combined top rate of 45 to 45.5 percent is the lowest top rate in Spain. Other ACs add 1 to 5 percentage points at the top bracket (Cataluña 50 percent, Valenciana 47 percent, Andalucía 47.5 percent).
For a 50,000 euro Madrid single filer, IRPF tax is approximately 10,800 euro. Adding Seguridad Social trabajador of 3,175 euro produces total deductions of 13,975 euro and take-home of 36,025 euro from 50,000 gross.
Madrid economic capital
Madrid concentrates a disproportionate share of Spanish corporate headquarters: 4 of the 5 largest Spanish banks (Santander HQ Madrid, BBVA Madrid, CaixaBank Madrid), the largest energy companies (Repsol HQ, Iberdrola Madrid main office, Naturgy Madrid), telecom (Telefónica HQ Madrid), and most large Spanish industrial groups (ACS, Acciona, Mapfre, Sacyr). Madrid is also the European HQ or major office for many international financial and consulting firms.
Tech salaries in Madrid are competitive with other European tech hubs (typically 50 to 70 percent of London or Munich salaries, but with much lower cost of living). Major Spanish tech firms include Cabify (mobility), Glovo (delivery, Barcelona-based but with Madrid operations), CartoDB (geospatial analytics), and substantial Madrid operations of Microsoft Spain, Amazon Spain, Google Spain, IBM Spain.
Why Madrid attracts inter-regional migration
Since 2019 when the Comunidad de Madrid government began aggressive autonomic IRPF reductions, Madrid has experienced substantial migration from other Spanish ACs (particularly Cataluña, Valenciana, Andalucía). High-income professionals often relocate to Madrid for the tax advantage; many corporations have moved domiciles or office concentrations to Madrid for the same reason.
For a 100,000 euro senior professional, the difference between Madrid and Catalonia IRPF is roughly 2,500 to 3,500 euro per year. Over a 30-year career, the cumulative tax saving exceeds 100,000 euro before investment compounding. Combined with Madrid's stronger high-end labor market, the migration trend has accelerated.
Madrid cost of living
Madrid is among Spain's most expensive cities for housing, particularly inner districts (Centro, Salamanca, Chamberí, Chamartín). Median apartment prices around 5,500 to 6,500 euro per square meter inner Madrid, 3,500 to 4,500 outer districts. Rents in inner Madrid 14 to 22 euro per square meter for newly-built apartments.
For a single 60k euro professional, housing typically consumes 30 to 40 percent of take-home pay in central Madrid. Outer districts (Tetuán, Vallecas, Carabanchel) are more affordable. Madrid commuter towns (Móstoles, Alcalá de Henares, Las Rozas, Pozuelo de Alarcón) offer further options.
What this calculator does not include
Madrid family deductions (small autonomic credits for dependents). Madrid Pareja de Hecho status (for non-married couples; affects tax filing). Plan de pensiones limit of 1,500 euro per year (capped in 2023 reform; was 8,000 euro previously). Reducciones por arrendamientos (rental income tax treatment). IBI municipal property tax. For precise Madrid tax returns, use the Spanish Agencia Tributaria 'Renta Web' portal or full-featured Spanish tax software like Declarando or TaxDown.
