WHOIS / RDAP lookup
WHOIS is the traditional protocol for looking up domain and IP registration data, but the modern replacement called RDAP returns the same information in structured JSON over HTTPS, and it's the format we use here. Enter a domain name like example.com or an IP address like 8.8.8.8, and you'll see the registrar that manages the registration, when it was first registered, when it expires, the registrant's masked contact information where available, and the abuse contact for the IP block. Most generic top-level domains and large IP blocks have full RDAP support. Some country code TLDs and small registries still rely on the legacy WHOIS protocol, which may show limited information here.
Frequently asked questions
Registration Data Access Protocol is the modern, RESTful replacement for the legacy WHOIS protocol. It returns structured JSON, supports standardized fields, and is intended to eventually replace WHOIS entirely.
