Why this calculator

Sachsen (Saxony) is the largest eastern German Bundesland by population (~4 million) and the largest economic contributor in East Germany. Dresden is the state capital. Sachsen has been Germany's most economically successful eastern state since reunification, with major investment in semiconductors (the Silicon Saxony cluster around Dresden including GlobalFoundries, Infineon Dresden, X-FAB, the upcoming TSMC fab announced 2023), automotive (Porsche Leipzig, BMW Leipzig, VW Zwickau), and machinery. Germany does not have Land income tax; Sachsen church tax is 9 percent of Einkommensteuer.

This calculator uses the 2025 German federal Einkommensteuer Grundtarif and Sozialversicherung components.

A rough sanity check: a single filer on 60,000 euro in Dresden with 2,400 euro of bAV contribution takes home about 36,200 euro after Einkommensteuer, social contributions, and Soli. Sachsen's distinction is the lowest cost of living among major German Bundesländer combined with rapidly growing semiconductor and automotive sectors that pay competitive Western Germany salaries. Real disposable income for tech and engineering workers in Sachsen often exceeds equivalent positions in Western Germany.

Sachsen church tax is 9 percent for Catholic and Protestant church members. East German church membership rates are much lower than West German rates (a legacy of GDR state atheism), with roughly 20 to 25 percent of Sachsen residents belonging to the major churches.

The deep dive

Silicon Saxony: Europe's largest semiconductor cluster

Dresden is the center of Europe's largest semiconductor cluster, sometimes called Silicon Saxony. Major employers and projects:

  • Infineon Dresden: largest semiconductor operations site of Infineon globally, 300mm wafer fab
  • GlobalFoundries Fab 1: large-volume 200mm and 300mm wafer production
  • X-FAB: specialty foundry
  • ZMD (now ASIC), Bosch Semiconductor (Reutlingen-headquartered but with Dresden presence)
  • TSMC: announced 2023, new fab in joint venture (ESMC) with Bosch, Infineon, and NXP. Construction underway 2025, production planned for 2027.
  • Robert Bosch Halbleiter: Bosch's Dresden semiconductor operations

The Silicon Saxony cluster supports roughly 80,000 jobs directly and is the largest concentration of semiconductor employment in Europe. Dresden has emerged as a key node in EU industrial-policy plans for European semiconductor sovereignty under the EU Chips Act.

For a 70,000 euro Dresden semiconductor engineer, Sachsen take-home is roughly:

  • Einkommensteuer: ~17,000 euro
  • Krankenversicherung: ~5,200 euro
  • Pflegeversicherung: ~1,200 euro
  • Rentenversicherung: ~6,150 euro
  • Arbeitslosenversicherung: ~860 euro
  • Soli: ~150 euro
  • Total deductions: ~30,560 euro
  • Net take-home: ~39,440 euro

Identical to other Bundesländer at the same income, but Dresden cost of living (median apartment around 3,000 to 4,000 euro per square meter) is roughly half of Munich, producing much higher real disposable income.

Leipzig and the automotive cluster

Leipzig (population ~620,000) has had strong economic growth since the early 2000s, partly driven by automotive industry investment: Porsche has a major manufacturing plant in Leipzig (production site for Cayenne and Macan SUVs, plus Porsche development center), BMW has its Leipzig plant (production of 1 Series, 2 Series, and X1), and Volkswagen Sachsen has the Zwickau plant about 100 km south of Leipzig (the largest EV production site of VW Group in Europe).

Beyond automotive, Leipzig has growing e-commerce (DHL European Hub at Leipzig-Halle Airport), media (Leipziger Volkszeitung, MDR Saxony broadcasting), and a vibrant creative sector (Leipzig has been called the next Berlin for its arts and music scene).

Leipzig cost of living is the lowest among major German cities. Median apartment prices around 2,800 to 3,800 euro per square meter. Rents have risen but remain among the most affordable major-city options in Germany.

Chemnitz and engineering tradition

Chemnitz (population ~245,000) has substantial engineering tradition (it was historically a center of German textile and machine-tool manufacturing). VW Sachsen has an engine plant in Chemnitz, and Technische Universitaet Chemnitz is one of Germany's strong technical universities.

Chemnitz was the 2025 European Capital of Culture, bringing significant infrastructure investment and tourism revenue. The city has been working to overcome reputation challenges from the 2018 anti-immigration protests through cultural and economic development.

Sachsen state government and Dresden capital

Sachsen state government is headquartered in Dresden, with substantial state government employment in administration, education (Saxony has Germany strongest university tradition outside Berlin and Bavaria), healthcare, and supporting functions. The Sächsische Staatsregierung administers state government for approximately 4 million residents and has been a leader in attracting high-tech industry investment.

Saxon culture and tourism

Dresden is one of Germany's most beautiful cities, with the Frauenkirche, Zwinger Palace, and Semper Opera being major cultural attractions. Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) is a major hiking destination, and the Erzgebirge mountains have skiing and historic mining heritage. Tourism is a significant employer in Saxony, particularly in Dresden, Leipzig, Bautzen, and Görlitz. Cultural employment includes the Semper Opera, Gewandhaus Leipzig orchestra, and various theater and music organizations.

What this calculator does not include

Kirchensteuer 9 percent for Sachsen church members (low membership rates in East Germany). Soli for high incomes. Krankenversicherung Zusatzbeitrag. Grundsteuer. Specific Saxon employer benefits and inducement programs aimed at attracting Western German workers to Eastern factories. For precise Sachsen tax returns, use Elster Online or German tax software.

Frequently asked questions

2 questions answered

Saxony has benefited from substantial post-1990 investment in high-tech industries: semiconductors in Dresden (now Europes largest cluster), automotive in Leipzig (Porsche, BMW, VW), and machinery in Chemnitz. The state government has been strategically focused on attracting capital-intensive manufacturing. Combined with lower wages than Western Germany attracting international investors, Saxony has substantially closed the East-West economic gap.
