Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) is a mid-sized eastern German Bundesland with about 2.2 million residents. Magdeburg is the state capital. The state has had a challenging post-1990 transition with population decline and slower economic growth than Sachsen or Thüringen, but is now experiencing significant economic uplift due to the Intel semiconductor megafab announced for Magdeburg in 2022 (construction underway 2025, production planned for 2027-2028). Beyond Intel, the state has substantial chemical industry around Leuna and Bitterfeld (a major German chemicals park), agriculture, and food processing. Germany does not have Land income tax; Sachsen-Anhalt church tax is 9 percent of Einkommensteuer.
This calculator uses the 2025 German federal Einkommensteuer Grundtarif and Sozialversicherung components.
A rough sanity check: a single filer on 55,000 euro in Magdeburg with 2,400 euro of bAV contribution takes home about 33,800 euro after Einkommensteuer, social contributions, and Soli. The state has the lowest cost of living among German Bundesländer (Magdeburg median apartment prices around 2,400 to 3,000 euro per square meter, less than half of major Western Germany cities) combined with growing high-tech employment prospects from Intel and chemicals.
Sachsen-Anhalt church tax is 9 percent. East German church membership rates are low (roughly 15 to 20 percent), reflecting GDR-era atheism.
Intel Magdeburg: Europe largest semiconductor investment
Intel announced in March 2022 plans to build two semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Magdeburg, with total investment originally estimated at 17 billion euro (subsequently increased to approximately 30 billion euro). The project would be the largest single foreign direct investment in German history and one of the largest semiconductor facilities in Europe.
Intel's Magdeburg fabs would produce advanced-node chips (originally targeted at 1.8 nanometer process technology) for European customers. The project has been subject to changes: Intel announced in 2024 that construction would be delayed and the project scaled back as part of broader Intel restructuring under Pat Gelsinger. As of 2025, the project remains officially planned but with uncertain timeline. EU and German subsidies under the EU Chips Act remain substantial.
When operational, the fabs would employ approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people directly and many more in supplier and service roles. The economic impact on Magdeburg and surrounding Sachsen-Anhalt is projected at tens of thousands of jobs in the broader supply chain.
For a 62,000 euro Magdeburg semiconductor engineer (current or future Intel employee), Sachsen-Anhalt take-home is roughly:
- Einkommensteuer: ~15,000 euro
- Krankenversicherung: ~5,200 euro
- Pflegeversicherung: ~1,100 euro
- Rentenversicherung: ~5,800 euro
- Arbeitslosenversicherung: ~810 euro
- Soli: ~120 euro
- Total deductions: ~28,030 euro
- Net take-home: ~33,970 euro
Identical to other Bundesländer at the same income. The very low cost of living in Magdeburg makes the real disposable income substantially higher than in Western Germany.
Leuna-Bitterfeld chemical industry
The Leuna chemical park (south of Halle) and the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park are major German chemical industry sites with origins in the GDR era. Major operators include InfraLeuna (operator of the Leuna park), TotalEnergies (refinery at Leuna), Linde (industrial gases), DowDuPont, and various other chemical and biochemical producers.
The Leuna park is one of Europe's largest integrated chemical production sites by area. The Bitterfeld park has been a key location for European chemical industry restructuring and brownfield redevelopment.
Magdeburg and Halle: principal Sachsen-Anhalt cities
Magdeburg (population ~240,000) is the state capital and has substantial state government employment, Otto-von-Guericke University, and the planned Intel uplift. The city has historic significance as a Hanseatic and medieval German city, with the Magdeburg Cathedral being one of Germany earliest Gothic structures.
Halle (population ~240,000) is Sachsen-Anhalt's other major city, with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (one of Germany's oldest universities), substantial pharmaceutical and chemical industry presence, and a creative-arts scene. Halle is closely integrated with Leipzig (in Sachsen, just 35 km away) via S-Bahn.
Sachsen-Anhalt demographics and post-1990 transition
Sachsen-Anhalt has experienced significant population decline since 1990, primarily through emigration of younger workers to Western Germany or other European countries. The state has been working to stabilize and reverse this trend through industrial investment (Intel and chemical industry expansion) and quality-of-life improvements. Population aged 65+ is a higher proportion than in most other Bundesländer, with implications for state government services and social security systems.
Sachsen-Anhalt heritage and UNESCO sites
Sachsen-Anhalt has the highest concentration of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any German Bundesland: Bauhaus sites in Dessau and Weimar (Dessau is in Sachsen-Anhalt), Eisleben and Wittenberg Luther memorials, Quedlinburg's medieval old town, the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, and the Naumburg Cathedral. These cultural heritage sites support substantial tourism and cultural-sector employment.
What this calculator does not include
Kirchensteuer 9 percent for Sachsen-Anhalt church members. Soli for high incomes. Krankenversicherung Zusatzbeitrag. Grundsteuer. Intel-specific employer benefits when the Magdeburg fab becomes operational. For precise Sachsen-Anhalt tax returns, use Elster Online or German tax software. The Finanzamt of the residence Bundesland handles all federal income tax matters; Sachsen-Anhalt has approximately 14 Finanzamt offices serving the state.
Frequently asked questions
Originally planned for 2027 production start. Intel announced in 2024 that the project would be delayed and scaled back as part of broader Intel restructuring; updated timeline as of 2025 is uncertain. The site remains officially planned with substantial EU Chips Act subsidies committed, but the actual operational date may slip to 2028 to 2030 or beyond.
