Intel Magdeburg: Europe largest semiconductor investment

Intel announced in March 2022 plans to build two semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Magdeburg, with total investment originally estimated at 17 billion euro (subsequently increased to approximately 30 billion euro). The project would be the largest single foreign direct investment in German history and one of the largest semiconductor facilities in Europe.

Intel's Magdeburg fabs would produce advanced-node chips (originally targeted at 1.8 nanometer process technology) for European customers. The project has been subject to changes: Intel announced in 2024 that construction would be delayed and the project scaled back as part of broader Intel restructuring under Pat Gelsinger. As of 2025, the project remains officially planned but with uncertain timeline. EU and German subsidies under the EU Chips Act remain substantial.

When operational, the fabs would employ approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people directly and many more in supplier and service roles. The economic impact on Magdeburg and surrounding Sachsen-Anhalt is projected at tens of thousands of jobs in the broader supply chain.

Sachsen-Anhalt demographics and post-1990 transition

Sachsen-Anhalt has experienced significant population decline since 1990, primarily through emigration of younger workers to Western Germany or other European countries.
