About this tool

WebP is the modern image format from Google that produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and even bigger savings against PNG when the source has transparency. Every modern browser supports it, which means converting a site's images from JPEG or PNG to WebP usually shaves megabytes off page weight with no quality drop a human eye can detect. This tool converts any JPEG or PNG you drop in to WebP using the browser's built-in Canvas encoder. You can pick a quality level (85 is a fine default for photos, 70 for thumbnails), optionally cap the dimensions for retina-only displays, and download the result. Nothing is uploaded; the conversion runs entirely on your device, so it is safe for screenshots or photos you would rather not hand to a stranger's website. For multi-format conversion in either direction, see the general image converter.

Frequently asked questions

5 questions answered

At the same perceived quality, WebP files are typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG, and the difference grows for screenshots and graphics where JPEG's lossy DCT artifacts are most visible. Smaller files mean faster page loads, less bandwidth, and better Core Web Vitals scores.
